In the late 2000s, the SMV began phase three of renovations and began building a satellite science center in Danville. At the time, the city was experiencing an economic downturn. Witschey had connections to the community and wanted to help revive the science center there. He redesigned the exhibits and renovated the museum's facilities.

In June, the Science Museum of Virginia moved into its new Broad Street Station headquarters. It replaced an older rental building on Fitzhugh Avenue.
