The museum will undergo a major renovation starting in September 2020. The renovation is expected to be finished by spring 2022. The museum is free to visit on weekends and holidays. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers free parking. There are also educational activities for children.

The Virginia Museum of History and Culture is a private nonprofit museum owned by the Virginia Historical Society. Its mission is to connect the past with the present and inspire future generations. It also houses many traveling exhibitions that feature artifacts from the commonwealth. The "Story of Virginia" exhibition, for example, explores Virginia's history from pre-colonization to recent events. There are also paintings of the Commonwealth's landscapes and an extensive silver collection.

The Virginia Museum of History and Culture also includes exhibitions on the Civil War. Visitors can also view John Marshall's judicial robe. The fourth chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, Marshall served from 1801 to 1835. His court decisions helped establish the supremacy of the federal government over the states. The museum also displays his portrait.

In addition to the Civil War, "Cheers, Virginia!" explores the early days of the Virginians' need to consume alcohol. The museum also features a sculpture of George Washington, as well as four murals by Charles Hoffbauer that depict the Confederacy in the early 20th century. Many artifacts are on display, including the famous liquor chest given by the Marquis de Lafayette to William Cabell Jr. as a thank you for his service during the Revolutionary War. The museum also includes the Monticello Wine Company wine bottle from the late 1800s.

The Virginia Museum of History and Culture is currently remodeling its campus. The museum is adding a new atrium, a research theater, and several community gathering spaces. In addition, the museum is adding an interactive piece that immerses visitors in the history, culture, and people of the Commonwealth. The museum's cafe and museum store are also being renovated.

The Eastern Shore Historical Society has donated several items to the gallery for display. The exhibit includes a mallard drake decoy, a scaup hen, a log canoe model, and a deadrise workboat, which was used before dredging became the norm. A great place to also visit is
